Paint Finishes And Their Common Usage

Both interior and exterior paint is available in a virtual rainbow of colors. Indoor paint is available in a number of types based on sheen; sheen being the amount is tends to shine when dry. High sheen paint reflects a great deal of light but it also highlights every small imperfection in the surface. At the other end is flat paint, this type of paint is as you would expect, very flat looking with no sheen at all, however it tends to cover imperfections in the surface. For large interior painting projects there is a very good chance that your painting contractor will have suggested different finishes for different rooms and surfaces; every available finish has advantages as well as disadvantages.

* Flat paint: Flat paint is extremely popular for interior use; it dries quickly and tends to hide imperfections and surface blemishes. The problem with flat paint is it “wearability,” it is easy to mar with dirt and fingerprints and difficult to clean. As flat paint contains a great deal of pigment it goes a long way. The rooms that are most often painted with flat paint are those that do not get a lot of abuse, bedrooms are a good example; except kids’ rooms.

* High gloss paint: High gloss paint has opposite characteristics to flat paint, it is easy to clean and very shiny but tends to show surface imperfections. This paint is ideal for doors, door frames, windows, etc.

* Satin paint: Many homeowners, when doing interior painting, opt for a middle of the road finish; satin, often called egg-shell. This paint is has a higher gloss than flat but less than high gloss. This material is an excellent all-around paint that can be used in any room in the house; it is relatively easy to clean and is ideal in active areas such as children’s rooms and family rooms.

Using different paint finishes for interior painting is a common practice; your painting contractor can provide you with recommendations based on years of experience.
