What Is the Best Way to Repair Terrazzo Floor

by | Feb 5, 2018 | Home Improvement

Terrazzo flooring is one of the most durable floor covering choices available. It is capable of outlasting virtually any other type, with the possible exception of customized concrete. However, despite that immense durability and long lifespan, it can be damaged. If that occurs to you, you’ll need to know a few things about terrazzo repairs. What should you know?

Common Types of Damage

There are a few types of damage that are more common with terrazzo. One of those is chipping. A heavy object dropped from a height onto the floor can chip it. This is similar to the way concrete can chip. While modern binding materials are more durable than concrete, there is still some potential for chipping to happen. The other type of damage you might experience is cracking. Usually, this has nothing to do with the terrazzo flooring itself, and everything to do with the subfloor. If the subfloor sags, degrades or is inundated with moisture, it’s possible for the terrazzo to crack.

Terrazzo Repairs – What You Should Know

Whether you’re dealing with cracked flooring or a chip, you’ll need to patch it. This can be done with a number of different compounds. Epoxy is commonly used, but other options include oil-based primer and cement patches (cement patching is only usable if the binder of your terrazzo floor is made from Portland cement).

In all instances, you’ll need to remove the sealer from the terrazzo floor before doing anything else. Mark off an area large enough to cover not only the damaged portion but also a little bit of undamaged flooring to either side.

Once you’ve removed the sealer, clean the flooring thoroughly and wait for it to dry. You need to make sure that all dirt and debris have been removed before taking the final step.

Next, you’ll need to combine the two-part epoxy, and then apply it to the chip. If you’re using a primer instead, follow the directions for the product from the manufacturer). All the material to dry before testing your terrazzo repairs.

Terrazzo repairs can require more in-depth work, particularly if the issue involves the subfloor. In these instances, it’s best to call a professional to examine the situation, identify the problem, and provide a comprehensive solution.
