Getting Tile Underlayment

If you are installing a tile floor, be sure that you have tile underlayment ready. The underlayment is the layer that goes in between the tile and the subfloor or the wall, depending on where you are applying the tile. The purpose of the underlayment is to allow your tile to last longer and prevent any major damage to the tile. It’s important that you choose the right type of material for an underlayment, as not all materials work well for this purpose.

Choosing the Right Underlayment

As mentioned previously, the types of tile underlayment that you use makes a difference. For instance, if you choose an unsuitable underlayment, you may have no choice but to replace it, along with your tiles, if and when damage occurs. By having the proper underlayment already in place, you can avoid mistakes like this. When choosing an underlayment, be sure to avoid materials along the lines of plywood and concrete, and instead, look for underlayment materials such as a backer board or thin sheets of polyethylene known as a membrane.

Uses of Underlayment

Proper underlayment can smooth out uneven spots on the floor, prevent water from seeping through, and prevent your tiles from cracking. As a result, it’s safe to say that underlayment is extremely important to have during the tile installation process. Be sure to take your time to find the right type of underlayment for your project.
