How Does a Water Ionizer Work?

When water runs over a plate which is electrically charged, the water is separated into two components. One component is rich in hydrogen atoms and is referred to as “acidic water” and the other component is rich in hydroxyl atoms and is known as “alkaline water.”The alkaline water is used for drinking, and the acidic water is used as a skin cleanser. This process of streaming is accomplished in a water ionizer machine.

Ionization will not take place if the water does not contain calcium or magnesium, which is called cat-ions, or an-ions such as salt or bicarbonates. Many manufacturers of the machines include a calcium or magnesium filter which insures very strong ionization.

Water can be ionized independent of the electric current that is used during electrolysis, just the minerals will ionize the water; they just won’t do it as fast.

Filtering, the first stage:

For optimum health, common tap water must be filtered. Tap water has at one time been contaminated with waste matter from industry, commerce and farming. Prior to the ionization of the water, it passes through ultra-fine filters, which remove:

  • Bacteria
  • Inorganic and organic chemicals
  • Pesticides
  • Detergents
  • Virus and pollens

The filter does not remove any soluble minerals so, unlike reverse osmosis or distilling, the healthy minerals that are required are left intact.

Once the water is filtered, it moves to the next phase of the process.

Ionizing, the second stage:

The water ionizer machine has a chamber where the water enters; it is in this chamber that a very weak electrical current is passed through it. The minerals in the water are given either a positive charge, and the water is acidic, or a negative charge and the water becomes alkaline. This water actually separates into two streams; the alkaline water is for drinking.

The minerals that are part of the alkaline stream are all beneficial for the health of humans, whereas the minerals that are in the acidic stream are not of any benefit. The water you drink is purified and alkaline; all compounds such as fluorine are flushed out in the acidic stream.

During this electrolysis process, a change actually takes place in the chemistry of the water. Water is made from one oxygen molecule and two hydrogen molecules, hence H2O. During ionization, one of the hydrogen molecules is disassociated; the result is one hydroxyl ion, which is alkaline. This change in the way the molecules bind together gives the water a “silken” feel, it is almost effortless to drink. This change is what gives alkaline water the ability to enter the skin and other tissue walls easier. During the first few weeks of drinking ionized water, there is usually a detoxifying effect.
