Signs of transmission trouble

There are many things that can go wrong with a car; however, mechanical problems often are accompanied by a tell-tale noise or distinct sounds and sensations that indicate trouble is on the way. When transmission repair in Crystal MNis required, the car may already have a good number of miles on it and transmission troubles should not come as a surprise.

There are a number of signs that indicate you are about to have a transmission failure which will result in transmission repair being needed.

Refuses to go into gear:

If you still drive a car with a standard transmission, the gears are changed manually once the clutch has been depressed. Although a manual transmission is much simpler in its design and manufacture, it still can fail. The most common problem is refusing to go into gear. The problem will usually be first noticed when trying to return to first gear, perhaps at a stop sign. This problem is usually caused by low transmission fluid levels, the incorrect fluid or adjustment of the clutch linkage shifter cables.

Burning smell:

If you smell burring transmission fluid, this is an indication that your transmission is overheating. This problem will definitely mean transmission repair in Crystal MN will be on the cards. Normally, this burning of the transmission fluid is indicative of inadequate fluid which means a leaking seal or dirty fluid that demands changing.

Noisy in neutral:

Hearing noises from a faulty transmission while the vehicle is moving may be intuitive, but hearing noises from the transmission while the car is in neutral would seem odd. This phenomenon is usually caused by low fluid in the reservoir but it can also point to components that have worn to the point of needing replacement. The components that may be the culprits are bearings or a worn idler gear.

Gears slipping:

A vehicle that does not require transmission repair will stay in the gear that the driver selected, or in the case of an automatic, the gear that the computer selects based on engine RPM. If a transmission is slipping, the car can literally “pop” out of gear. This is potentially dangerous, if you have to avoid an accident by rapidly accelerating and the transmission pops out of gear, this can lead to a disastrous accident.

Clutch dragging:

For those people that drive manual transmission cars, a dragging clutch can be a problem. A dragging clutch is one that refuses to disengage the clutch pressure plate from the engine flywheel when the clutch pedal is depressed. It is impossible to shift gears because the engine continues to drive the clutch, which is still engaged. The driver most certainly knows when this happens because attempting to shift gears will only result in a grinding noise with no motion.

There are other problems that can crop up with a faulty transmission, none of which are a problem when the car is taken for transmission repair in Crystal MN.
