What is a Photofacial and How Can it be Beneficial?

by | Sep 2, 2015 | Health

A luxurious, even skin tone is one of the most sought after beauty attributes. Unfortunately, for many, the damage caused as a result of years of exposure to the sun and other harsh elements, as well as the effects of aging, can result in age spots, sun spots, dark circles and other unsavory imperfections. Luckily, a pain-free, non-invasive treatment, known as the photofacial, is available to help restore the skins youthful feel.

Getting a photofacial in Chicago – what you need to know

Called by various names, including photo rejuvenation, a photofacial works to essentially resurface the skin. This is done using a series of intense pulsed lights (IPL). IPL has been proven to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections, smooth out skin, and even out skin tone. Photofacials are also beneficial for increasing the skins collagen and elasticity and treat a variety of problems such as:

  * Dark patches, brown spots, age spots
  * Repair redness and damage from the sun
  * Combat rosacea
  * Minimize spider veins, broken capillaries, and dilated blood vessels

Photofacial treatments are not recommended for treating sensitive skin around the eyes.

How do Photofacials work?

In a typical setting, a qualified physician will use a handheld device that emits laser light in filtered waves over the affected areas. The light being delivered is very bright, very high-energy, and targets blood vessels and lesions underneath the skin. The areas being treated will absorb the light and cause dark pigment to fade. Results are typically noticed over the course of two weeks.

Prior to commencing treatment, the affected area will be cleaned and a topical gel will be applied. The handheld laser device will be gently moved over the affected area and an audible tone can be heard and a mild sensation may be felt. After the treatment has concluded, the gel will be removed and the area will be treated with sunscreen.

What are the benefits of a photofacial?

The entire process if painless and takes, at most, 40 minutes to complete. Photofacial treatments require significantly less downtime after treatment than other complex facial treatments.
